Athletes can face crisis on and off the field. While some crises are easily identified like death or a season ending injury, others may be less noticeable. Each athlete holds their own perspective on whether a situation is a crisis or a manageable obstacle. When athletes perceive that they have faced a crisis, the psycho-physiological effect can cause a significant disruption in functioning and performance. In the world of elite sport, we find that athletes are not limited by their physical ability, but by their mindset and mental resilience on any given day. If we think of each athlete’s mind as a gas tank that fuels performance, anything that depletes the tank will begin to affect the outcome of the performance. When crisis is perceived, getting athletes the right help can help them continue to perform at a high level. This presentation will provide an overview of the relationship between mind and body based on current scientific literature. The process of how athletes can fill and drain their tank through stress, active recovery, and intervention will be reviewed.
